Tennessee has rigorous standards and requirements to obtain a security guard license. To become an unarmed security guard in Tennessee, applicants must:

  • be at least 18 years old
  • be a U.S. citizen
  • have no convictions in the past five years with no drug or alcohol use on record
  • submit to fingerprinting for both the TBI and FBI
  • complete mandatory training

Tennessee requires several types of training to be completed prior to receiving a security license. An hour of training must be completed in each of the following:

  • orientation for security guard training
  • legal aspects of security and limitations
  • emergency procedures
  • duty requirements

Armed Security Guard Requirements in Tennessee

To become an armed security guard in Tennessee, applicants must be hired by a security company before a license is granted, which must be renewed every two years. To become an armed security guard in Tennessee, applicants must:

  • be at least 21 years old
  • be a U.S. citizen or alien resident
  • have no convictions in the past five years with no drug or alcohol use on record
  • submit proof of residency for the past five years
  • submit fingerprints cards for the TBI and FBI
  • hold a driver’s license
  • have successfully completed training requirements

Tennessee requires armed security guard applicants to partake in a four-hour training course. An hour of training must be completed in each of the following:

  • orientation for security guard training
  • legal aspects of security and limitations
  • emergency procedures
  • duty requirements

Applicants must also provide proof of appropriate firearms training and safety from a certified instructor for the specific handgun that will be used on duty. A certificate of completion card must be carried at all times. Fees to become an armed security guard in Tennessee total $165.
